Denim can be daunting…

We have heard it countless times here at Helene M; buying denim can be as overwhelming as trying to buy a bathing suit!  So we thought it’s time to give you our thoughts and opinions on denim and bring to you the best the denim industry has to offer.  Let’s begin by breaking it down into its simplest form.  Helene M. believes that the following three denim styles (basic boot cut, skinny leg and wide leg trouser) should become the new basics in your closet.  You can’t go wrong with these three styles.

Note: Not all styles are for all bodies.  You know this already, either intuitively or through the sheer madness of multiple try-ons.  Denim now has that infamous reputation of being difficult. Here we make it simple. The silhouette should flatter, not falter, and you should look and feel your best.  That’s that. Read on…

The basic boot cut- if you buy ONE pair, this is it!
This is the most universally flattering style on all body types, since it hugs your waist and hips where it should, then follows the contour of the leg to slightly bell out at the bottom. This is also the most classic style. Worn in a medium to light wash these are your “go to” everyday jeans.  If you wish to dress these up grab a pair in a dark wash, with little or no distressing. Pair them with a silky top, a fitted blazer and voila, you’re ready for a night out with the girls…

Look for:
Hudson Signature 5pkt - fabulous boot cut style, a perennial fave!
J.Brand Love story - excellent boot cut silhouette, many washes.
J. Brand Blue Label - newly deigned for curvier figures. The gals love it!
Pure Color - Vogue or Cosmo, perfect for a contemporary look with out the contemporary fit.

The ubiquitous Skinny leg.

Well, the name alone brings on the panic and the thought that you must be skinny to wear them. Many people steer clear of this style as a result. Not so… we have carried this classic look in our store for years, and have seen many different body types look amazing in these.  They’re our favorite for tucking into riding boots or galoshes a la classic Jackie O.  Pair them with a ballet flat and voila, Audrey Hepburn it is… So you see, these are not the enemy, but a friend indeed.

Look for:
James Jeans high rise skinny- these are FLYING out of our stores!
Hudson Stella skinny - looks best in a dark wash. No detail on back pockets, the ultimate skinny!
Hudson basic skinny - has their trade mark back flap pockets.  Best in a medium wash for your every day chores and just hanging out.
Christopher Blue - more straight then skinny leg.  Achieves the same look with a little more room. A nice new version or should we say diversion from the traditional skinny. More classic in fit.

Last but certainly not least, the wide leg trouser
The newest and most sophisticated style, the wide leg is designed to be fitted at the waist, sometimes at the hip as well, but what makes this style stand apart is the way the denim falls into a nice wide leg. No hugging, only a nice camouflaging of anything we’d rather not see outlined.  All body shapes can wear this by keeping the fullness of the leg in proportion with the rest of the person.  If you are tall, go as full as you like, shorter shapes should caution on less fullness.  And if you are permitted to wear denim to the office, this is the pair to wear, as it is the dressiest of the three silhouettes. They look extremely “well versed” with a tailored button down, pearls and pointy heels. Tres chic!

Look for:
J. Brand wide leg - perfect in a medium wash for hanging out.
Hudson deluxe wide leg - looks great in a dark wash for evening.
Christopher Blue wide leg - classic trouser, less flare at the bottom then with your more contemporary wide leg.
Pure Color Wide leg
- with their new D-fine fit system, allows you to tighten your jeans with a hidden drawstring, Creates a lift to contour your backside. Prevents sagging!  Customers love this new technology!
