Our style mantra here at Helene M. has always been “classically hip.” We love flipping through the pages of the fashions mags to see the latest and greatest trends, but let’s be realistic – a trend is only as good as the style of the person wearing it. Style to us goes beyond referencing what’s hot this moment (a la neon from head to toe, bondage gear, lingerie as outerwear, etc), it’s about looks that have endured and have transformed with the times.
And now that spring has finally sprung, we thought this would be the perfect time to name our favorite “trends” and must-haves of the season…
- Organic fabrics: Linen, silk, cotton, cashmere. These beautiful, natural fabrications are everywhere. We’re seeing loads of airy linen knits, couldn’t-be-thinner supima cotton tees, and the plushest lightweight cashmere you’ve ever laid your hands on.
- A great fitting white pant: This piece of clothing is going to be your best friend this spring and summer. It’ll kick you out of those cold-weather denim doldrums quick, plus they have a way of making even a comfy tee seem more dressed up.

- Classic springtime neutrals: White, beige and navy have never been so hot. These classics takes a modern twist when paired with an amped-up pop of color like sunshine yellow or Caribbean-turquoise(which also happens to be the “official” color of the season).
- Jersey Dresses: Nothing says effortless like a jersey dress. It’s possibly the most comfortable, packable, versatile thing in your wardrobe. Try classic cotton knits and gladiator flats for day-to-day and dress it up a little with super-soft pima cotton with a sheen.
- Feminine Flourishes: Ruffles and florals and lace, oh my! Anything that accentuates the glory of being a woman is popping up like daisies around here. Not comfortable with all the frills? Try subtle details like ruching that hugs the body or carefully placed pleating to create a little extra interest.

Keep Things Light. It’s such a good mantra all around. And at this time of year fashion embodies that frame of mind. Fabrics seem to float and hemlines rise. Color, whether bold or wispy, is infused and refreshed. The official Pantone color report for spring this season (see link at the bottom for the Pantone report) is one of unexpected hues. We see bold ones like turquoise and unexpected tomato, while some designers have honed in on earthier notes like herb and eucalyptus. The spectrum is nuanced and lovely on both ends. Gauzy cashmere, sheer linen, silk, and slub cotton all make for ethereal concoctions that we can feel comfortable in. Half the fun of dressing is layering and creating what it is that we will move in while we go about our day. This season is inspired by doing just that with ease, and by keeping things light.

Dear Helene M. customer,
When urged by my employees to write something for our 10th anniversary celebration, I have to admit, I was a bit nervous and perplexed as to why anyone would want to hear from me. But as I started to reflect back over the past 10 years I realized that I do have something to write about and it has nothing to do with me at all! It’s about all of you, my incredible customers, who have been with me from the start and have helped me to grow Helene M. to where it is today. You are the cornerstone of my business and I truly would not be here without you.
As we continue to grow, I would like you to know that I committed to staying true to my original vision of providing “classically hip” women’s apparel and accessories that look modern but not trendy. And of course the inspirational style of Audrey Hepburn will always guide my buying decisions.
Despite the ups and downs of the retail world, I have been very lucky to be able to do what I love to do and to be surrounded buy such great people on a daily basis. And I can not forget to mention my employees who are an integral part of my success. They inspire me, make me laugh and always seem to push me just a little bit more. I feel very proud to have them on the frontlines and the true face of Helene m.
So you see, our 10 year celebration has nothing to do with Helene M. but has everything to do with you, our valued customers and employees.
Thank you for your support and cheers to many more years to come!
Helene Michalski

Last week I set off on a fabulous vacation with my husband to the Dominican Republic. While waiting to board our connecting flight in Newark I spied a conspicuously chic woman looking very much like Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue, ready to pre-board our flight. As my second glance turned into full on gawking, it hit me that this was the real deal! Ms. Anna Wintour in the flesh! Only a few feet in front of me. We locked eyes, designer sunglasses shaded hers, but who would expect less? (Probably Prada, right?) We stood a moment, face to face. I believe it was adoration that flowed from me to her and I do believe she basked in it, before turning with complete composure to be seated in first class, of course. While my moment with the famous editor was brief and albeit undocumented, my husband noticed on our arrival to the DR that a golf cart on the tarmac was awaiting a passenger, so we waited for the fashion editor extraordinaire to exit the plane. Ms. Wintour de-planed and de-layered, her tiny frame alert with purpose (clad in Hermes orange top and lizard loafers). Then, voila, whisked away a la golf cart. Not before I got some photos of her, though! Just had to share them with you all… And my vacation, ladies, was delightful!
